Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) is an activist collective based in New York City which advocates for research and funding of acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome (AIDS) prevention and treatment. It also pushes for greater acceptance of lesbian, homosexual, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) lifestyles in addition to a variety of other left-of-center causes. GMHC was conceived in during the early stages of the AIDS crisis in the United States with the support of Larry Kramer, a screenwriter and homosexual activist whose abrasive rhetoric towards both health authorities and his fellow homosexual men eventually led to him leaving the organization.
Since its founding, GMHC has collaborated with other influential LGBT activist groups such as Lambda Legal and secured endorsements from former New York express governors Mario and Andrew Cuomo, as well as former New York Metropolis mayor Ed Koch. In addition, the group has received taxpayer-funded federal grants, primarily from the Department of Health and Human Services. The story of the AIDS movement isone ofregular people: students, bartenders, stay-at-home mothers, teachers, retired lawyers, immigrants, Catholic nuns, newly out same-sex attracted men who had just arrived in New York, and many others. Some had lost friends or lovers. Some felt a moral calling. Some were just trying to balance their sexual karma. Many were angry. Most had no medical background or professional credentials – just a sense of urgency, tenacity and an unwillingness to stare away.
When Gay Men’s Health Crisis, the world’s first AIDS service organization, was founded in , it was regular people trying to meet the needs of all people living with AIDS. Its workforce of volunteers provided HIV prevention education as well as physical, emotional and legal support.
At the start of the epidemic, AIDS was considered a “gay plague,” and to be openly lgbtq+ was to exposure abandonment, eviction, assault or worse. Families disowned their children. Hospitals turned patients away. Funeral homes refused bodies. And many people with AIDS found themselves alone and in need.

However, it is often the case that the interests of providers, payers, and other organized stakeholders take precedence over the patient. To make certain that New Yorkers hold a stronger role in how health care is delivered and how health policy is made, NYHealth issued a ask for for proposals, Patients as Partners. Through this initiative, NYHealth is supporting projects that amplify the voice of New Yorkers and rebalance the health look after system so that patients have more influence over their health and health care.
