Horror and Mystery Writers

There is a rich tradition of mystery and horror story writing by LGBTQ authors. Perhaps the best recognizable of these authors is Clive Barker of Great Britain. Several of the writers have received the prestigious Lambda Literary Award for mystery writing.

Many of the books have been serialized into detective stories that are hugely popular around the world. Notable among these are the Donald Strachey series by U.S. journalist Richard Lipez, which have been made into a trendy television movie series starring gay player Chad Allen. Similarly, Scotland's Val McDermid's series has been adapted for television under the call 'Wire in the Blood'.

The first published mystery publication with a same-sex attracted sleuth as the lead character is believed to be 'The Heart in Exile' () by Hungarian author Adam Martin de Hegedus, writing under the pen name Rodney Garland. The first American murder mystery novel is believed to be 'The Gay Detective' () by Lou Hogan (writing under the pen name Lou Rand).

Task #3 of the  Study Harder Challenge is “read a gay mystery” and I am happy to report that I had to function to narrow this list down. Finding LGBTQ rep in mystery—or any other genre—shouldn’t require intense sleuthing, but it wasn’t that long ago that the mystery genre lacked diversity on every level. While we still have a long way to travel towards parity in lgbtq+ representation, it is really nice to have several titles to recommend in a list like this and not have it be the same handful of titles recommended over and over again.

I have several series starters and a few standalones to recommend for this Read Harder task, all by and about lgbtq+ people. Most of the titles are from the last few years, and a couple are releases. In historical mysteries, we’ll travel to Georgian London,s Harlem, and 19th Century Chicago. In contemporary mysteries, we’ll head to Salt Lake City game shop, an exclusive boarding educational facility, the London drag scene, and more. Get ready to chase down clues, map out theories, and figure out whodunit. That’s right, folks: be male lover, solve crimes.

I'm looking for Thrillers, suspense, mystery novels with relatable gay characters. I'm looking for novels with characters who don't fulfill the gay stereotypes of clubbing, drugs, overly flertatious, promiscuous sex, etc. This is all fine for many gay people, but there are also many gay people like myself that are adorable much straight in every other way except their partner and romantic and sexual attractions.

In America especially, part of same-sex attracted (gay male) culture tends to be lots of parties and sex. Just look at the features of a gay cruise.
However this does not stand for all gay people, and I feel the former types of gay individuals are over represented in our media compared to people like me who's concept of living as a glad gay person involves basically the exact same as it would be for a straight guy, barring the fact a devoted, monogamous same sex relationship is involved.
I don't have any problem with the many homosexual people who dive into the gay culture and love it, but it isn't for me. It is
