“I’m sorry for the rain!” is the first thing my tour guide, Doina Craciun, says when we meet just steps away from the Place de la Concorde in Paris. It’s been raining nonstop since arriving in the French capital, and I look and feel like a wet chien. However, my mood changes quickly upon encounter Craciun, who is one of the co-founders of Lgbtq+ Tours France.
Originally from Romania, Craciun speaks at least five languages and is an expert in French art and history. She tells me that while there are numerous French history tours in Paris, there wasn’t one that focused on the city’s rich lgbtq+ history. So she and her colleagues started their retain. The company bids about a half dozen queer-focused tours, and the one I’m on is a version of the “Highlights of Paris: LGBTQ+ Perspectives Tour.”
We start at the Place de la Concorde, a famous square housing the Luxor obelisk. As Craciun tells me, this square is where French nobility and aristocracy became “shorter” during the French Revolution. (It’s the execution spot of Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI, among many others.)
GAY PARIS
ABOUT THE CITY
Paris needs no introduction. The city is home to one of Europe’s largest gay scenes and is a wealth of culture and art that is second to none. Paris is ‘grand’ and ‘local’ at the same time: its majestic boulevards and affluent buildings coexist with the village-nature of its neighbourhoods. France has a very advanced legislation when it comes to LGBT rights and Paris has been a very cosmopolitan and laissez-faire town for a very long period. The city offers an incredibly rich choice when it comes to LGBT art and tradition, nightlife and entertainment. Paris’ lgbtq+ quarter - the centrally located Marais, is the perfect place to explore.

Considering how many wonderful cities in Europe had been destroyed in the last war and didn't gain their former beauty and fame, yet, after 80 years, Paris is truly a treasure and miracle.
You could stay in Paris for months or stop by Paris again and again, and you would still see other beautiful and interesting spots if you explore the city with curiosity and open eyes. Just stroll around a bit and do not only follow the routes in your travel manual book.
If you come to Paris not only to visit the Louvre and other sights but wanna dive into the Parisian life, then try to avoid August. Many Parisians take their long vacations in August and some companies are even completely closed. In the gay scene even the most popular lgbtq+ clubs and bars won't be very crowded or will be empty or closed.
