Highlighting NGPA Scholarship recipients and their future aspirations through Piedmont

The National Gay Pilots Association celebrated 25 years of scholarships in These scholarships have provided opportunities for current and aspiring or current LGBTQ+ members and allies of the aviation industry. Piedmont has the privilege of organism a sponsor for these awards. It is an honor to see the impact the award recipients have and will carry on to make within the aviation industry. June is Pride month and is an important time for our company as we are proud to highlight LGBTQ+ members of our community and two of Piedmont’s NGPA scholarship winners, Matthew Koerner and Zachary Miller.

As a young youngster, Matthew grew up surrounded by influences of the aviation industry. His father, a pilot himself, took him flying in a when he was a kid and he instantly fell in love with everything about planes; from the smell of oil in the air to even the moldy seats. They created countless memories as his father taught him the basics of aviation as they flew around their home mention of Michigan.

Another First for UND Aviation

NGPA scholarship eases financial burden for LGBTQ+ students.

The UND chapter of the National Gay Pilots Association (NGPA) will award an NGPA Scholarship to one of its members in April

UND’s John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences is the first college to establish a scholarship specifically for NGPA members.

UND was also the first college to launch an NGPA chapter. Since , the chapter has grown from six members to more than 40, with a mission to develop, support and unite the LGBTQ+ aviation community and its allies.

Ted Fosselman, ’19, a captain with PSA Airlines, spearheaded the scholarship effort. “I’ve always had the philosophy that you want to leave a place better than you found it,” he said.  

Also leading the plan is Delta First Officer Jared Herndon, ’08, who knows cost is often “the biggest hurdle” aviation students face. “I crave to make sure finances are not the only thing that keeps someone from pursuing this career,” he said.

Yahoo! unveils '8 foremost scholarships for LGBTQ students,' including one for gay pilots

On July 17, writer Hanneh Bareham published a Yahoo! Finance piece that outlines the eight top scholarships for students who identify as LGBTQ. The broad range of options include the National Gay Pilots Association Scholarship and a scholarship specifically for “LGBTQ+ single parents or the children of LGBTQ+ available parents.”

As noted by Bareham, these scholarships make college more affordable for incoming students and are not expected to be paid endorse in the future like a loan.

The first scholarship listed is from the Acorn Equity Fund, which is awarded to LGBTQ students residing in most Illinois counties. The amount is between $1, to $4, if selected.
