Straight couple opens lock for LGBTQ+ collective on Long Island

OCEANSIDE, Nassau County (WABC) -- A married couple from Prolonged Island has opened a bar for the LGBTQ+ community.

Gina Wuestmann and her husband Dave Wuestmann opened BTW, which stands for Born This Way, in Oceanside on Extended Beach Road in November.

"We just wanted to create a safe space, extend something to a community that we both feel is completely underserved," Dave Wuestmann said.

Gina Wuestmann also owns North Village Tavern in Rockville Centre and said she often heard from her LGBTQ+ customers that they loved her food and her bar, but didn't feel like they could be themselves there.

"You come in here and we don't care what you want to be, how you want to be," Gina Wuestmann said. "Just be yourself."

Wuestmann said straight people often ask if they're allowed to come to the bar. Wuestmann said everyone is welcome.

BTW regular Korey Heester applauded Gina and Dave Wuestmann for opening the prevent even though they don't identify as LGBTQ+.

Nassau County’s only gay night club, which also operated as one of just a few full-time gay bars on Long Island, shut down for good last month, less than two years after opening its doors.

Halo Nightclub's abrupt ending comes after it was plagued by financial issues even before it officially opened for business in Oceanside.

Co-owner Kyle Savage said Halo had been hindered by issues with filing the proper paperwork with the State Liquor Authority, or SLA. That stymied the bar's ability to start making money, he said.

Despite renting the property in May , Halo did not get its full liquor license from the SLA until January The owners were stuck paying rent for months before Halo could generate any revenue because it could not serve alcohol — or even open its doors to the public — until then.

Patrick Garrett, a ambassador for the SLA, confirmed the original filing in Nove

Straight couple opens Long Island LGBTQ+ bar to construct a safe space

OCEANSIDE, Fresh York -- As soon as patrons step through the doors of the Born This Way exclude, better known as BTW, co-owner Gina Wuestmann gives them a warm greeting.

Within five minutes, she's either offering them a free shot or explaining how she and her husband opened their bar on the eve of the pandemic shutdown last year.

Wuestmann and her husband, David Wuestmann, who are a straight couple, often locate themselves explaining why they decided to open this safe space for the LGBTQ+ community in the Long Island hamlet of Oceanside.

David's response is always the same.

"Gina and I are allies of the community, and we both felt that this was an underserved community," he said. "There are not too many places on Long Island where people can be themselves. This was just our lead to and our mission. We're here to provide territory to people who yearn to be themselves."
