As has been frequently noted, the ancient Greeks did not own terms or concepts that correspond to the contemporary dichotomy of ‘heterosexual’ and ‘homosexual’ (e.g., Foucault, ). There is a wealth of material from ancient Greece pertinent to issues of sexuality, ranging from dialogues of Plato, such as the Symposium, to plays by Aristophanes, and Greek artwork and vases. What follows is a brief description of ancient Greek attitudes, but it is important to recognize that there was regional variation. For example, in parts of Ionia there were general strictures against queer eros, while in Elis and Boiotia (e.g., Thebes), it was approved of and even noted (cf. Dover, ; Halperin, ).

Introduction

For the last two decades, Pew Research Center has reported that one of the most enduring ethical issues across Christian traditions is sexual diversity. For many Christians, one of the most frequently first-asked questions on this topic is, “What does the Bible say about attraction to someone of the similar sex?”

Although its unlikely that the biblical authors had any notion of sexual orientation (for example, the term homosexual wasn't even coined until the after time 19th century) for many people of faith, the Bible is looked to for timeless guidance on what it means to honor God with our lives; and this most certainly includes our sexuality.

Before we can leap into how it is that Christians can maintain the authority of the Bible and also affirm sexual diversity, it might be helpful if we started with a little but clear overview of some of the assumptions informing many Christian approaches to understanding the Bible.

Sexism is definitely not a "system of beingsex", which is what you were assuming "gayism" meant. Sexism is a system, if anything, of discriminatory behavior based on sex. (Whether I&#;ve led a sheltered life or not is another discussion. )

There are other meanings of -ism, but I chose the one that seemed to fit our show context. Myridon&#;s suggestion in # "indicating a characteristic usage, esp of a language" would contain applied if the context had been, say, "Is the synonyms &#;twink&#; a gayism?"
