So I went to Crossings in Lexington one night—first time there. A couple friends had hyped it up. Said it had a good crowd, sturdy drinks, solid music, and a chill vibe. I figured, why not? I wasn’t even planning to stay long—just grab a drink or two, maybe meet someone cool, then bounce. I get there around It’s packed, but not chaotic. A petty dark, neon lights on the walls, music thumping from the back. I grab a seat at the bar, order a drink, and start people-watching. Not long after, this guy sits down next to me. Older than me, maybe mids. Decent-looking, dressed nice, confident. He introduces himself—Marcus. Starts chatting me up right away. Nothing aggressive at first. Friendly. Flirty, maybe, but chill. He offers to buy me a imbibe, and I tell him, “I’m good, thanks.” But he waves the bartender over anyway. Drink shows up in front of me. I’m thinking, okay, whatever, I’ll sip it and then bounce. Historical marker # stands outside of one of the oldest LGBTQ gathering spaces in the Joined States.
As early as , LGBTQ Kentuckians gathered discreetly at East Main St. in Lexington. While not an explicitly LGBTQ space at this point, the ownership tended to allow patrons relative freedom from scruitiny. In , however, gay men John Hill and Estel Wilson opened The Gilded Cage in the space and it has been a queer-friendly establishment ever since. This early opening predates the famous Stonewall Inn of Fresh York City by three years. The space has gone through numerous mention and ownership changes over the years, including operating as The Living Room after , as Johnny Angels after , and currently as the Exclude Complex. In , it was the site of the wedding between Marjorie Jones and Tracey Knight, who were the first homosexual woman couple in the country to sue for a marriage liscense. Given the long history of the building, it is only fitting that East Main St. would be home to the first Kentucky historical marker celebrating LGBTQ history.

Lexington being celebrated as a “one-night stand” urban area for performers, though, was nothing new.
